The one difference worth understanding: pregnancy rate vs live birth rate
Clinical pregnancy rate is the proportion of treatments where a pregnancy is confirmed on a scan. Live birth rate is the proportion that end with a baby born alive. The second is always the smaller number, because some pregnancies sadly do not continue.
Clinics frequently advertise pregnancy rates, sometimes described as “success rates” without saying which. It is the more flattering figure. There is also cumulative success rate, which counts several attempts together and is larger again.
When you compare clinics, ask for the same thing each time: live birth rate per embryo transfer, for our age group. The HFEA publishes verified figures for every licensed UK clinic, and those are the ones to trust.
